Messenger’s About To Get A Major Makeover

A little over two years ago, Facebook told us we could no longer message through their app but instead had to download a separate app, Facebook Messenger.  While most adapted and installed the new app, there was some controversy surrounding it.

But alas, here we are, two years later and it’s hard to imagine someone who isn’t on Messenger.

Despite adding the GIF keyboard, stickers and holiday-themed message actions, users haven’t seen much of a cosmetic change like other messaging apps (lookin’ at you Snapchat).

In efforts to keep up with the changing trends, Facebook just announced a major makeover for Messenger. In other words, an update that is easier for YOU!

Instead of having all your messages (in order of most recent) – which is, IMO, sloppy – Facebook is adding in different layers, creating more of a flow in your Home section.

  1. At the top, you’ll have a few of your recent messages where you can easily pick up where you left off.
  2. Favorites! Facebook knows with whom you chat it up with the most. Shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, since FB knows all.
  3. #HBD! FB is now making it even easier to wish your frenemies a happy birthday. What will be your new excuse for “forgetting”?
  4. Although this feature isn’t new when chattin’ on a laptop, you’ll now be able to see who is online through the messenger app.

With over 900 million monthly users, Messenger proves to be the leader in the how-we-communicate-with-each-other field. But as we’ve seen in the past, platforms cannot afford to stay status quo. As Snapchat amps up their chat feature, it is crucial for FB Messenger to continue innovating Messenger.

Will this new update allow Facebook to be the leader in messaging or will we see another platform rise to the top? Comment below and let me know what you think.
